DE, KE and E boiler equivalents: equipment selection and boiler-house modernisation

Industrial DE, KE and E boilers are still in use at plants across many industries. But as the equipment ages, the need arises for repair, replacement or a complete modernisation of the boiler house.

How do you select a modern boiler to replace a DE-10-14, DE-16-14, DE-25-14, KE-6.5 or KE-10? Can an old water-tube boiler be replaced with a fire-tube one, and which parameters need to be taken into account?

TANSU manufactures industrial steam boilers and offers technical solutions for plants that need to modernise their steam supply system.

In this article we look at what equipment selection involves and the advantages of modern TANSU boilers.

1. How to select an equivalent for a DE, KE or E boiler

When replacing an industrial boiler, it is important to consider not only its model and rated output but also the plant’s actual needs.

A DE-10-14, for example, is rated for a steam output of about 10 t/h, and a DE-16-14 for roughly 16 t/h. But the plant’s actual load may differ significantly from the nameplate values.

When selecting a replacement, you need to consider:

  • the required steam output and working pressure;
  • average and peak load;
  • fuel type and properties;
  • the condition of the existing steam pipework, pumps and flue gas system;
  • water-treatment and automation requirements.

For KE-6.5 and KE-10 boilers, the coal properties and the fuel feed and ash removal systems are also analysed.

The main principle: a modern boiler is selected to meet the plant’s process requirements, not just to match the designation of the old equipment.

For more on the design differences and designations, see our previous articles: the differences between DE, KE and E boilers and modern alternatives and specifications, models and designations of DE, KE and E boilers.

2. Modern TANSU steam boilers as an alternative to industrial equipment

TANSU specialises in manufacturing industrial boiler equipment and offers fire-tube steam boilers for a range of industrial applications.

In a fire-tube boiler, unlike the water-tube DE, KE and E, the combustion products pass inside fire tubes surrounded by water.

This design provides a three-pass flue gas path, a large water volume and natural circulation.

That said, fire-tube boilers are not a direct design copy of a DE or KE. Whether they are suitable depends on the technical parameters of the specific site.

TANSU steam boiler specifications

ParameterValue
Output300–25,000 kg/h
PressureUp to 25 bar
FuelGas, diesel, heavy fuel oil
Declared efficiencyUp to 92%

For certain configurations with an economiser, the declared efficiency can exceed 95%. Actual figures depend on the scope of supply and operating conditions.

For plants that use solid fuel, TANSU also manufactures coal-fired steam boilers with outputs of 300–2,000 kg/h and pressures up to 25 bar.

To determine the right model, specialists take into account the actual load, steam parameters, fuel and the specifics of the boiler house.

3. Engineering expertise and the advantages of TANSU

When modernising an industrial boiler house, it is important to assess not only the boiler’s specifications but also the manufacturer’s ability to deliver a complete technical solution.

TANSU offers:

  • In-house manufacturing. Industrial boiler equipment for plants across many industries.
  • Selection to your specification. Output, pressure and configuration chosen to suit your production needs.
  • A complete scope of supply. Burner equipment, automation, an economiser, a deaerator, pumps and other components can be included.
  • Engineering support. Liaison with the manufacturer’s specialists on equipment approval, installation and commissioning as part of the project.

Besides steam boilers, the company produces thermal oil boilers rated at 500–3,000 kW with heat-transfer fluid temperatures up to 300 °C.

They are used in production processes that need high-temperature heating without high-pressure steam.

So TANSU offers equipment for a range of industrial heating applications, making it possible to consider several technical solutions depending on the plant’s requirements.

4. We will select a boiler to replace your DE, KE or E

If your plant is planning to replace a DE-10-14, DE-16-14, DE-25-14, KE-6.5, KE-10 or another industrial boiler, the first step is to establish the actual parameters of the boiler house.

For a preliminary selection, it helps to provide:

  • The make and model of the existing boiler.
  • The required steam output and pressure.
  • The type of fuel used.
  • The plant’s average and maximum load.
  • The city where the plant is located.

From this data, it is possible to narrow down the technical options and define the parameters needed for further calculations.

TANSU manufactures industrial steam and thermal oil boilers.
